  1. Actually it's Time Before Overhaul.  It's important when you want to buy or sell an airplane because it controls the amount of money the new owner will have to spend--and how soon--to keep the airplane flying.  If you study the sales ads, you will notice that the more time a used airplane has on its engine(s) the lower the price will be.  The seller has to allow some cash for the money the buyer will eventually have to spend on the engine.

  2. TBO = Time Between Overhaul, its the number of hours/cycles/days (whatever is used as the limiter) that a component on an aircraft that has a hard-time when it must be removed and overhauled.

  3. well, i have to say it is really Time Between Overhaul though in real sense it is the time before overhaul. ex. Engine has a 5000hrs TBO it has accumulated 3000 the difference which is 2000 is the time before next overhaul.

The TBO is fixed, either before one reaches 5000, one must remove it for overhaul or aircraft can be grounded.

Note: 5000hrs for engine overhaul is example only.

  4. Time between overhaul

An aircraft engine's overall economics is how often it has to be overhauled, the so-called time between overhaul.
