  1. According to Wikipedia, Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text, written around the 6th century BC.

    'Tao' means 'way' or 'path' and 'Te' means 'virtue'. These two words are the opening words from each of the two sections. 'Ching' means 'scripture' or 'classic'.

    The title can be roughly translated as 'The Scripture of the Path and the Virtue'. (But the title could also be translated in many different ways, due to the multiple meanings each of the words could have.)

  2. The Tao Te Ching is fundamental to the Taoist school (Dàojiā 道家) of Chinese philosophy and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. This ancient book is also central in Chinese religion, not only for Taoism (Dàojiāo 道教) but Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, aided by hundreds of translations into Western languages.

  3. “Tao-Te Ching,” (tao—meaning the way of all life, te—meaning the fit use of life by men, and ching—meaning text or classic

  4. Tao = way

    Te = virtue

    Ching = classic (or text)
