What does VESA wall mount mean?

I just got a Phillips 42 " LCD flat screen with out a wall mount and I want to purchase a wall mount. When I go to there websote it says VESA wall mount compatible what does VESA mean?

Have you heard of UL?  It's the people that test everything and tell you if it's safe.  VESA is a company like that.  Your tv is probably VESA compliant, not compatible.  Check it again and see if you read it right.  If it is VESA compliant, it just means that they tested it and it is a safe tv to hang up.
