  1. W1 stands for Week 1 which is emergency tax. To get onto a normal code you need to hand in your P45 to your employer. The 522 is the amount of tax free earnings you are allowed to earn in 1 year before you pay tax ir £5220


  2. I think the 522 is translated into £5220 which is the maximum you can earn before getting taxed, but don't quote me on that.

  3. It means for tax purposes, the first 5220 quid you earn (sorry, no pound sign on my keyboard) doesn't count.
