What does Xp's "Lease Obtained" and "Lease Expires" mean (networking)?

When i use ipconfig i notice those two lines...what do they mean?

  1. You probably are connected to something like a router, using DHCP and IP address leasing.  A network device like a router can be set up provide the IP addresses for your local network.  The IP address given out for each connection can have a specific time limit before it invalidates the IP address and a new one is given.  If there aren't any other computers waiting for an IP address to become available, then you are usually re-assigned the same IP address as before.

    IP address leasing is useful on a busy network where you want to limit the usage on the local network.

    If you're hooked up to a router, you can set the router's DHCP IP address lease time limit, or you can set up 'static' DHCP IP addresses and specify a permanent IP address for each computer.
