  1. it is like when you go in for surgery the anathesoligest knocks you out with medicine he sometimes just puts a little mask thing over your nose it is not scary at all :)

  2. They specialize in anesthetics. Anesthetics are the special medicines or drugs used to make the body senseless (numb) in part or full for treatment.

These anesthetics are used while surgery, tooth pulling, stitches etc. Anesthesiology is science which deals in these medicines and procedures.

  3. They put you to sleep for surgery... but more importantly, they wake you up again.

  4. Well, to state the obvious, we specialize in Anesthesiology.

We keep people alive and comfortable for surgery, sometimes manage critical care patients, or chronic pain, or provide pain relief for laboring women.

We do a lot.  I get to start iv and arterial lines, and put HUGE iv's in people's necks.  I get to do spinals (best anesthetic EVER!) and epidurals and nerve blocks.  I put tubes into windpipes and totally take over breathing for people (which can be a challenge in 300+ pounders, or when we have to ventilate the lungs separately during lung surgery).  I manage fluids, intra-operative and post-operative pain, blood pressures, heart rates, oxygenation and whatever else keeps people alive while surgeons cut them up and make them bleed.

I put epidurals in laboring women, which is one of my favorite things to do.  They (by and large) appreciate what I do.  I also get to manage patients for emergency C-sections, and those who try to bleed to death after delivery.  Elective C-sections are fun - everybody's happy, and who doesn't like to see new babies?  Sigh.

Anybody can put you to sleep.  It's the "keeping you alive" and "waking you up" parts that take training and experience to do well.

    I love my job.
