  1. Death omen

  2. That's a hard question to answer. It seems like black dogs show up in the mythology of many cultures, including the current western one. The first answer is accurate, but it only applies to a limited range of people. In Japanese mythology they can also be protective spirits, however my experience is that black dogs are also associated with Satan as a result of Christian influence and are considered to be one of the forms in which he can manifest ("The Omen" wasn't inaccurate about that part).

  3. Dogs in general mean loyalty in the Native American tradition.  Black dogs are sacred to Hecate the Goddess of Magic and justice.  I think dogs are great and have much to teach us about unconditional love and kindness, both important spiritual lesson we all need to learn.  Blessed be.
