  2. I have talked with three different Intelligence officers stationed onboard my ship.

Onboard the ship they generally coordinate the Intelligence Function of the ship, meaning they direct what the IS's (Intelligence Specialists) and CTs (Cryptologic Technicians - me) are doing on a daily basis. They do this the most. He briefs the captain and the Operations Department Head about such basic daily operations such as UNREPS (underway replenishments), flight planning, weapons engagements, who is leaving and coming to the ship, and directs the briefing of situations in hostile areas like, for example, the situation between China and Taiwan, weapons in Japan, etc. One of the most important functions that he has during flight operations is to oversee the flight path of birds going to Iraq or other areas, directs briefing of the pilots, as well as the gathering of information from what the planes are receiving via radar and other electronic support systems.

Naval officers in general serve an administrative role. The good ones check up on their people and stick up for enlisted personnel...but that is a whole other issue. They approve rules for the ongoing operation of the division (such as a division officer).

I know that in Iraq they coordinate the efforts of collections (any intercepts regarding radio transmissions, unusual and unidentified radar contacts, human intelligence aka spies, electronic intelligence, imagery especially from the overhead flights, direct the use of electronic attack, satellite intelligence, counterintelligence (denying the enemy any information that can help during wartime) and basically any other forms of intelligence dealing with the interchange of the tactical and strategic picture. Virtually everything the IO does is on a classified level, often at Secret and Top Secret/SCI.

  3. actually Intel Officers do NOT interrogate on a regular basis, if at all.
