  1. You know what? If you want to wear pants, who gives a c**p what other people are wearing. Wear pants.

Make sure that your pants go with your program and that they meet costuming regulations (if such exist). Your pants should not be too short, too long, too flared, too fitted, etc. Be sure that it has a secure velcro strap that goes under the boot. Also make sure that your blouse will not untuck (some velcro here might not be amiss) when you move around and stretch your arms over your head. Do some practices in your chosen costume just to make sure that nothing binds or tears out or the like.

Don't think that just because everyone else wears a dress that you have to. If it makes you mentally more comfortable to wear pants, then wear pants, but DO make sure that the pants you wear are suitable for skating and for competition.

  2. I'm an adult skater. All adult women I know wear dresses when competing, unless pants somehow fits their program or music. So in reality - it's a dress for you, with skating tights. But the dress need not be a little, tiny thing like the little girls wear. There are options that look good on adult women, and even options for people like me - adult women who aren't skinny and who would prefer not to put certain things on display. And you can get opaque skating tights, so any "reveal" of your legs is really an illusion, and you stay warm.

I know that USFS rules say that women can now wear pants, but still, it's rare. I don't know the ISI rules re: pants, so you can check into that.

I don't know your size or body type, so I can't recommend specific dresses. However, many adult women, unless they have really hot bodies and are on the youthful side of adulthood, prefer longer length skirts - dance skirts, for example, rather than freestyle skirts.

There are lots of off-the-rack options, if you can fit in them. If, however, you have b*****s, stomach or hips, you may prefer something semi-custom. Freida B, for example, offers stock dresses which she'll alter. She'll lengthen the skirt, or add long sleeves, or change the skirt for a different one, or make the chest area more... forgiving, etc. I'll link to her, below. My dress is from her.

And, of course, if you're a low level skater, and this is your first competition, you can absolutely get away with a simple leotard and a wrap skirt. In fact, for my first comp, I added some crystals to the leotard I had, borrowed a wrap skirt from my coach, et voila! Skating costume!

  3. If I'm not mistaken, there aren't clothing restrictions with ISI competitions (but with USFSA competitions there are).  But I will say whatever you wear should be appropriate for the program . . . it's a competition so you want your costume to help (not hinder) your performance!

Also, it depends on what category you're skating in.  For the most part, ladies do wear the dresses.  But I've worn pants in several of my programs (and that was at FS4) . . . though, it was appropriate for the program.  I once had a "disco" program and had on these tight, jazzy velvety bell bottom pants.  I had a program where I wore short- shorts to look like a dance "star".  And even with USFSA, I wore pants a few times for artistic programs where I was portraying a "guy".

Whatever I wore was for the sake of the program.  You just don't want to look you're in a practice outfit - or in a business suit ready for work (um, unless that's what you're program is about - hee hee!).

If the thought of wearing skating tights is scary, I've seen ladies wear tight leggings that match their dress instead of the nude color tights.  I remember seeing one lady who had a tie-dyed dress with the same tie-dyed leggings - that actually looked cool.  And black tights might look ok with some black dresses.

    Anyway, hope that helps some!!

  5. Most people will wear a skating dress, though some do choose to wear a unitard, though the most popular option is usually a dress.

  6. Adluts can wear regular length dresses, some dresses come in the "adult length" or you could even wear a dance length dress.

  7. is this your first competition? good, you'll enjoy competing and skating, everyone wears dresses at competition, even if your an adult. everybody will be wearing dresses, so dont get freaked out.  i cant count how many competitions ive been to, but i sware everybody there wears dresses. if you let me see your music, i can help you with the dress.. :]

PS i hate wearing dresses, but its part of the fashion for competition. every practice i wear pants, anyways. and i skate like everyday.
