  1. Moths, black butterflies and bees are everywhere in our garden. We coexist. We are interdependent. They depend upon me watering and planting new plants. I depend upon them to move from flower to flower. The plants rely on them for pollination. A busy, buzzing, flapping team …

  2. It might have been a moth. Some species get confused with flutterbys. In L.A. we have a dark brown one called a mourning cloak that looks black. It would help if I knew where you live and if the flutterby was a decent size or a swallowtail variety.

  3. If you've positively identified it as one particular butterfly which does not breed or migrate to your country then it may be an escapee from a tropical house, zoo or a private collection.

Alternatively, you may have mis-identified it.  There are plenty of butterflies with mainly black wings, and some that appear black in one light but purple or blue in another (depending on which way the light is shining).  There are also several black moths.

You don't say where you are so it's a bit hard to work out what similar species are indigenous to your area.
