Question:

What does a bland diet do for the stomach?

My doctor told me to eat a bland diet since I've been having diarrhea (sorry, had to menton it). But I don't know why. What's the purpose of a bland diet?

And another question: what happens if I take too much antacids for my stomach? Is this the reason why I've been having diarrhea in the first place? :-/

Thanks for answering!

  1. Basically, certain foods (like hot peppers and other acidic foods) cause heartburn.  Bland foods don't cause these problems.  Certain foods will also neutralize the acids.

  2. a bland diet is eating foods that are easy for the body to digest, and don't have a lot of spices in them. toast, soda crackers, soup broth, oatmeal, cream of wheat- these are all bland foods. if you have been having a lot of diarrhoea, i would also start drinking gator aid. it replaces the electrolytes that you loose through diarrhoea. and too many antacids wont cause the diarrhoea, but a bland diet will mean you wont get an upset stomach- you probably need to give your system a chance to heal a bit. good luck.

  3. A bland diet usually causes constipation, so in this case your doctor is using it to reverse the diarrhea. I don't see why antacids would be doing that to you, but then again I am not a doctor, but they do not cause that effect on me.
