What is a burst? So is a burst the same thing as a page mode DRAM. So you first sequence an RAS, followed by a CAS. Since you get the entire row when you use the RAS, you can get subsequent bits in the row by pulsing the CAS. So if I want 4 bits I can pulse the CAS 4 times. Is that what a burst refers to? So a 4-bit burst read is the same thing as pulsing the CAS 4 times? What exactly is a burst?

  1. You are correct (with the 4-pulse CAS part).

A burst is a series of bytes/words in the memory that occur in successive addresses.  Some burst memories limit you to only 8 or 16 successive CAS pulses.

Page mode allows you to set a row address, but the column addresses must still be generated individually by the memory controller.
