  1. A cardiogram is the little squiggly line you see go up and down on the screen every time your heart beats and the machine that does this is called an electrocardiograph or an ECG for short.

  2. A technician, nurse or assistant will put small electrode patches on your wrists and ankles, and six on your chest. She will attach these electrodes to the ECG machine with small alligator clamps or similar. She then asks you to hold still, presses a button, and about five seconds later, you're done. She then gives you a tissue to wipe off some gritty paste used to improve contact between skin and electrode. Actually last week, when I had mine, she didn't use much paste.

Even the adhesive on the electrodes has been improved. The newer stuff doesn't hurt when she yanks it off your hairy chest.

Then she points you down the hall in your open-backed gown, derriere exposed, for your hernia check and prostate exam, second door to the left.

  3. A cardiogram is a painless electrical curve traced by a cardiograph, used in the diagnosis of the heart. You won't feel a thing.
