Trying to decide if my child is ready, so any information, especially from parents of first graders or teachers that are familiar with this, would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I have been told that concepts like simple fractions will be introduced during first grade as well-is that accurate?

  1. some things you should know would be:

how to say and write all the letters

    what sound each letter makes

how to count to at least 100

be able to sound out words

know how to spell first and last name

how to do simple math by counting on fingers

know how to cut (i know it sounds funny but its a big thing)

should be able to talk out conflicts with other students

i think very simple fractions like two halfs in a whole and things like that but very very easy

  2. Simple fractions are kind of ok. but it's kind of a little-hard for kindergarten, all you need to know is letters, 2 to 4 letter words, basiv numbers, some extra stuff, and that's all. Yes, It will be introduced. i think. A little extra skills of history and science makes your child a better chance to get As and a higher chance to get a B.

  3. Honestly, that depends on where you live. You could get a copy of Kindergarten expectations from your public school system and see what it says they should know by the end of Kindergarten. I do know that where we live, our little ones had to know at least 30 sight words, all shapes, counting to 100, basic fractions, and much much more. They are expected to be able to read basic books by the end of Kindergarten. Also, they should be writing 3 complete thoughts onto paper in the correct order, telling a story. It of course doesn't have to be spelled correctly but it should be legible and make sense.  Again, I would check from your local school system. You can also go onto some different websites (just google grade level expectations) and see what comes up. All I know is, school is not what it was when we were little! They must be able to do WAY more now at a younger age!

  4. don't worry about fractions!

entering they will begin with letters and numbers. it is usually a letter a week. they begin so basic but by the middle of the year they learn sequencing in stories, reading response and a good bit of writing w/ details. spelling is not important in first grade.

1st grade is amazing they begin barely reading to loving to read/being readers. 1st grade has been my favorite year so far, they change SO much.

  5. I remember in first grade we did simple addition basic subtraction greater than or less than problems. We worked on money skills. We did crafts. And We had a word wall which each week we got our spelling words and we made a dictionary and studied.

You kid may not be ready but if you let them go they will learn fractions if they do them you shouldn't worry. Anyway if they went to Kindergarden and got to know the kids and hold them back they will miss friends.

  6. not much just your abc's counting at least to 100 how to write do simple addition and subtraction problems and how to read

  7. i think they have to know simple subtraction and addition and how to read small words and i think they have to know emergeny numbers, their own phone number, and their adress, thats what i know
