What does a coach look for in middle school basketball tryouts?

Hustle, focus and the ability to listen and learn. Of course, good grades in your classes doesn't hurt either.

it depends who your coach is! just try your best-- i played basketball for a while and the teams i tried out for where looking for sportmanship, ball control and shooting. good luck!

coaches look for kids with basic skills..... they should understand the idea of shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding.. u know, the basics. they also want kids that have positive attitudes and personalities ( the more positive a kid is... the more easier it is to train and teach him). and i no for sure they want kids that show sportsmanship and know how to balance basketball games and practice between school work.

leadership, ball handeling, rebounding, defense is also very key. I just graduated middle school and i played in both 7th and 8th grade. My coach was looking for leadership, good sportsmanship, and not willing to give up and is always hustling

My kids are both Middle School age and play basketball.

Of course, a coach does look for talent...ball handling, shooting, defensive ability...but at this age...TRAINABILITY is the most important.

At this age, kids should be able to easily make baskets inside the 3 point line.  They should be able to be quick on their feet, and coordinated enough to dribble with both hands, and be able to do some basic pivoting and defensive footwork.

The mindset of the student is also very important.

They should be getting good grades, but in basketball, have great focus and listen to their coach without dribbling the ball or throwing it in the air while the coach is speaking.

Also, the player should be a hard worker and hustler, and be able to communicate with their fellow teammates...accepting losses and wins as a TEAM and not pointing blame toward any one person.

ggooda attitude and fundamentals.. you also need some skill
