  1. What you eat in Japan varies of course from family to family but generally speaking it feels like more fish, more booked veggies. Also, you drink miso-soup often which fills up your stomach with less calories than if you had eaten food.

You eat plain rice to the meals.

Less calory intake than eg french fries.

The way you cook could be different. There are deep fried dishes such as tempura, corokke, but you more often also just boil in tasty soup.

Additionally In America, I notice you drink soft drinks to the meals but in japan, you very often just drink cold tea or water .

Just small differences in a long run, maybe noticeable!

  2. You can get bento boxes online, I like http://www.jbox.com/ and pick up some Japanese food from http://asianfoodgrocer.com.  They eat all sorts of things in Japan - lots of rice, pickled veggies, seaweed, sesame seeds, fish, tofu.  My husband makes homemade ramen, cold soba, stir-fried veggies and tofu - all sorts of goodies!

We have a rice-cooker, so we can set it and come home or wake up to fresh rice to pack for lunch or eat for dinner.

I recommend picking up a good bento-box or Japanese cookbook, and lots of rice and trying to incorporate asian vegetables.  They also make instant miso soup and also pre-packaged curry that are pretty easy to make.

  3. The Japanese eat a lot of fish and tofu.  They do not eat very much red meat, they don't really eat dairy at all I don't think, and they eat lots of veggies.  If you ate veggies and sushi everyday, I think you would be pretty close to their diets.
