What does a diseased red fox look like ? we have one in our back yard and he looks sick .?

he is missing almost all of his fur..... u can barely see his eyes...... i do not see any sores on him looking thru binoculars.......

Sounds like mange at the least. You do need to call animal control since that fox could infect many others as well as domestic pets.

I'd call your local humane society, I know its July 4th and they are  closed, but their answering machine should definitely have a emergency number. Its very dangerous to have one of those in your backyard, I know you know it is dangerous and you wont go near it, but do any of your neighbors have kids that might not know that?

Call to have it removed asap.

I am sure he is sick, maybe even old.  It sounds like mange, but the big factor here is not what he looks like, but the fact that you are seeing him.  I am assuming you are seeing him during the daytime.  Foxes come out at night and are not very active during the day.  This is something to be more concerned about rather than the appearance you have described.  I would definitely call animal control.  Foxes are usually skittish, but a fox will attack if it is hurt, sick, and desperate.
