What does a dryer sheet do?

ok you know how you put dryer sheets in,well,your dryer?well what exactly do the dryer sheets do?do they just make the clothes smell good?would something happen if you didnt put a dryer sheet in?

Well, apart from reducing static and making laundry soft apparently they put an oily film on the fluff filter of the dryer.  Wash the filter with soapy water occasionally.

Actually, you don't have to use a dryer sheet in your laundry at all.  Yes, they do help alleviate static, but if you add about 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to your wash (put it in the place where liquid fabric softener goes--NOT the bleach chute) you won't have static cling if you dry your wash at the right temperature.  Besides, it's cheaper and if you suffer from sensitive skin allergies (as I do), you don't get that itchy feeling from touching your laundry.  Not only that, but vinegar eliminates any odors that cling to your clothes, such as cigarette smoke or that musty smell that towels can get when you store them for a while.  But, to answer your question, dryer sheets are basically unnecessary.

it removes static. if you want to see, don't put one in and when you take put your clothes and try folding them you willi get shocks like constantly, I've forgotten them before

it removes static, when i dont use dryer sheets some of my clothes come out static-y and stick to my skin

it gets rid of the static that builds up in your dryer . the static is caused by the friction of your clothes rubbing against the metal tub.(that part was a freebie) it also softens your clothes.

Dryer sheets will also deposit an oily film on your clothes. Use dryer balls instead, they'll do everything a dryer sheet does except giving the clothes a scent and depositing that oily film. You can buy those balls at a Dollar store. So..it'll be cheaper too. Then you can use the sheets by hanging them in closets or cupboards or in the car and get a nice scent in these places.
