What does a farad capacitor do?

Question

I just Bought a complete system with 2 10in Rockford Fosgate P2 Punches, and an Alpine 650 watt amp.(I havent hooked it up yet) My buddy told me I probably needed a compacitor since my lights kinda dim without my system.

I Honestly dont know what a compacitor does or what kind I need. Someone offered me a 0.5 farad compacitor but I dont know if thats what I need so help me out.

A capacitor stores extra charge. Heavy-duty capacitors act as a buffer zone between your amp and your car's electrical system.  The power stored in the capacitor is released when your amp needs it the most, this way it does not have to draw additional current from your battery and will not affect your car's electrical system.  The extra power stored in the capacitor will fix your headlight dimming problems. An alternator with a higher current rating would also fix the problem but that would be a more expensive solution.

THE .5 FARAD CAP WILL BE PLENTY. I HAVE A 1 FARAD WITH A 750 WATT AMP AND 2 12" SUBS.

Capacitor does not make a huge difference it just spikes the voltage coming from your battery.  With 2 10" subs and a 650watt amp you have no need to waste extra money on it.  When you get up into the 12's and 15's with a lot bigger amps is when it helps a little.
