  1. Guitar pedals are commonly reffered to as effects pedals because thats what they do they add effects to your guitar. There are many different types of guitar foot pedals such as Wah Flanger Distortion Chorus Fuzz Echo Compression Reverb Delay Grunge everything they even have signature foot pedals. What these pedals do is they manipultae your guitar if you use a distion pedal its going to give your guitar that extra boost of distortion if you use a wah it creates a wah sound when you play. There are also tuning pedals which help you tune your guitar. There are also foot switch pedals what these pedals do is change your amp from clean to overdrive or overdrive to clean. Many people have multi fx pedals which do a variety of things. They give a bunch of pedals in one Wah Flanger Distortion etc and they give you some amp settings for example you know can manipulate your amp to sound like old amps such as a Fender Blackface or a Vintage Vox. Effects pedals can add a variety of harmonics vibratos and more tonal/pitch changes to your guitar.
