A Foreign Service Officer (FSO) is hired by the US Department of State (DOS) on the FS pay scale.  According the to Main State, "Foreign Service Officers help formulate and implement the foreign policy of the United States. An essential part of the frontline personnel at all U.S. embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions, they will be found at nearly 265 locations worldwide as well as in Washington, D.C."

    Aside from special assignments, there are five career tracks as an FSO:

    Management Officer

    Consular Officer

    Economic Officer

    Political Officer

    Public Diplomacy Officer
