I called an agency and registered as a handyman, they asked me if I have experience and tools and I said yes, but in fact I have never even worked on a building site before. I would like to know what is expected of this type of worker and what tools are required for this job. Also, what does a painter (does he paint walls, windows etc...?)do and what tools does he need?

  1. as a handyman you need some of every tool for every trade, think about £5k to start with a decent kit.

however with your attitude of, lying is fine, you MASTER trades in a few weeks, dont give a stuff about others and general massive chip on your shoulder you either wont have any problems as you are just fantastic and everything is simple or

you will get sussed out quickly due to incompetence and appauling attitude and blame others for your situation

    loathsome attitude

  2. i;m a builder and it takes years to learn different trades. if you go on site you will find that no one will like someone just having a go. i have never seen a handy man on site , having worked on site for over 13 years. look for a different job.

  3. Can you tell me were the building sites that you will be working on are ? Just so that I can give them a WIDE birth!!!!

  4. If you've no experience then you would be at best a liability and, at worst, a danger.  Most building sites nowadays have teams of highly skilled people - its not just a bit of painting here and there - and everyone needs to know what the others are doing in order to ensure that jobs run smoothly, on time and without accidents.

If you've never done it before you'll be found out pretty quickly and most likely fired on the spot. If you want to work on a building site go to college and get qualified, otherwise leave it to the professionals.

ps If you don't care that you'll get sacked or are a liability that could effect other people, then why ask for advice?  You clearly don't need ours, Good Luck

  5. A handyman does not usually work on a building site unless he is needed to fix office equipment, toilets, air conditioning, heating, and water fountain related repairs. In order to be a handyman you must have a working knowledge of electrical wiring, plumbing, refrigeration, and HVAC. Everything from lighting to air conditioning to toilets must be repaired on site. The tools needed vary from electrical ohmmeter to freon gauges , refrigerant, and a working knowledge of pressures and electrical motors and relays involved in heating and cooling. You will be expected to quickly repair these things on the spot. You will need a vehicle and all sorts of hand tools. Their will not be a helper given to assist you. Their will be no one to consult except the few retired peeps like myself willing to give free advice. What you need to do is quit telling folks you are what you are not. Go to tech school and become someone or ask to be an apprentice.

  6. No offence mate but if you feel like you need to ask this question, i would suggest looking at a different trade

  7. Like the other people said, if you have to ask, then find something else to do, sorry but a Handy man is just that, they can do almost every thing from plumbing to electrical work, paint, weld, braze, solder, do wood work ,hydraulics, metal work,

  8. The other people pretty well sum it up . You are a danger to the professionals you will be working with. You don`t even know what tools you need. You need more tools than you can just walk in with , in fact if you filled up your van with some of the tools (you do have a van , don`t you? ) you would still have at least a garage half full of the tools you are not using at any one time. Do you know how to frame for a door or window? What is the proper slope  for a drain pipe? Do you know the difference between a load bearing wall and your ****? Get off your horse and maybe get a job as an apprentice. You will gain experiance in a field you have no idea about and get paid . And you can ask all the questions you need to learn not to be a danger to yourself and others. If I see you on my jobsite , and you have no idea wtf you are doing . I will make sure you become part of the foundation. h**l you may already be on your way to doing that.
