Several types but a biscuit joiner is most popular. It cuts a small space in both sides of the wood to be joined. Then a small football shaped piece of wood is wet with glue and the wood is pulled togeather and clamped. When dried, it is like one piece of wood.

     I have a "biscuit cutter" it make small slots that pieces of wood, cut the same way, are put into these slots with glue. When hardened, it's like one piece of wood. Angles for wood, like a mirror, are held together this way very tight.
