What does a neurologist test for when it comes to learning disabilities?

My daughter has an auditory processing disorder and another mother I know who also has a child with an auditory processing disorder suggested I take her to see a neurologist. What is it that I would request? She also may have ADD.

The team that manages a child with a disability is composed of the pediatrician who usually is the one who first sees then the developmental pedia who will evaluate if there is a lag in the achievement of his developmental milestones, the pedia neuro who determines whether there are structural abnormalities which are reflected in the nervous systems function. An audiometrist will rule out hearing impairment. There is also the child psychologist who will administer the tests. The pedia neurologist will usually ask for the EEG and the CT scan.

A neurologist may be able to tell which areas of the brain are functioning correctly and which are not.  If the problems are anatomical or physiological, this may be of great benefit to you.  It is probably best to discuss your areas of concern with the neurologist and let the professional help you decide the best route.  A visit to a speech-language pathologist for therapy may also help your child academically and socially.  In speech and language therapy, your child may gain skills needed to cope with auditory procesing disorders as well as the overcome focal problems associated with ADD.

i am epileptic, i was born with this condition, but my mother was always told i just had learning problems, and i had ADHD.  i was 14 years old by the time one of her friends (my teacher) told her to take me to a nuerologist, mum took me there and told the neuro. my condition and told him they had just found out i had eye problems, and she thought that would fix the rest of the issues i had! i had an E.E.G and a C.A.T scan, and they found that i had sleep deprived epilepsy!, i now have my condition controlled, and went through to university! When you see the neurologist, be honest with them and tell them all of the issues you have with your daughter (no matter how minor they seem) because the neuro. will know what to look for, if they know what the problem is! And if they find something wrong with your daughter, don't panic, now that you know what the problem is, you can learn how to fix it, and give your daughter a much better chance at life!  Good luck!
