What does a person mean when they say "you have nerve" ?

or I know you have nerve something like that.

My teacher told me that and I dont quite know what she means by that.

Could be understood as "how dare you".

To me, it means guts.  Sorta like courage but in an aggressive-like way.

For example,  "It took her alot of nerve to go out with my boyfriend!"  OR   "That took nerve for her to call me fat!"
