I was recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant. I realized that lactose in is more foods than just dairy foods. I would like to get some snacks to make up for the shortage of food that I can't eat.

I also start school soon in NYC. I eat lunch outside and I was wondering if people had any suggestions of what to eat. I go to school in the Chelsea area and if anyone knows of a place to eat in please let me know. Thanks.

  1. snacks? I know this sounds lame, but literally anything without lactose. Apples, fries, wraps, salads without cheese, etc. Anything that you know will be without milk. Watch breads, many of them have milk in them. At a LOT of places you can order the "low carb" version which eliminates cheese and regular bread.

btw, as a warning I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant for 10 yrs. and then got diagnosed with celiac. It was a nightmare. I got accused of cheating on the diet, told I had an eating disorder and needed a psych, I was depressed, I was an attention seeker, etc. Finally I just figured it out myself. If you continue to have issues, please get a TtG screening for celiac, I would not wish what I went through on anyone!

  2. try eating fruits and vegetables im pretty sure all of that is lactose free and in nyc thier is a lot of fruit stands so before you get to school buy a grapefruit or an arugula

  3. You should pack fruit (apples, bananas, pears) and nuts for snacking.

  4. If you have Lactose Intolerance – Some options to consider

        * Drink small quantities of milk at one time.

        * Drink milk with meals.

        * Use Lactaid (an enzyme to help digest lactose in dairy) every time you eat dairy.

        * Use special milk products such as Lacteeze or other "Lactose-free milk" which have lactose reduced by 99%. Some "lactose-reduced" milk products have lactose only partially reduced – so be sure to read the labels.

        * For infants with lactose intolerance, try Lactose-free infant formulas.

        * Try calcium-fortified soy milk to ensure adequate calcium intake.

        * Also try calcium-fortified orange juice if you are concerned about calcium.

        * Stick to dairy products that are naturally low in lactose, such as swiss cheese and cottage cheese.

        * Watch out for non-dairy commercial products that may contain lactose. If the ingredient list includes any of the following ingredients, it has lactose: whey, curds, milk by-products, dry milk solids, and nonfat dry milk powder.

    Lactose Intolerance: what about yogurt?

  5. I would recommend fruits and vegetables. Become a label reader. I have some serious allergies, and have discovered that most restaurants will be glad to divulge the ingredients in their food when you explain that you have a serious allergy to a common ingredient. Best wishes to you.

  6. Lactaid is completely worthless, unless you want to take 4 or 6 before eating anything.

A lot of products have dairy "hidden" in them, but many others that you may think have dairy are actually safe!  Non-dairy creamers and stuff keep better, so they're used more often then you'd realize.

Many breads you'd buy off the shelf are dairy-free.  Bread with peanut butter, therefore, is a good snack.

Fresh fruit is a great option.

Tofutti makes a great ice cream sandwich.

Really, the major thing you've lost is cheese.  There are just no good cheese replacements.  They either don't melt or anything or just lack decent taste.

As far as going out to eat, Asian food is usually dairy free.  Middle Eastern food is usually a good option, as well.

There are lots of theories out there, like eating yogurt or small amounts of milk, for "curing" lactose intolerance.  To be honest, there's nothing that will really help.  Those methods will just help you figure out the amounts of dairy you can eat before it starts to bother you.  It's best to just avoid it and the discomfort that comes along.
