  1. The play maker doesn't always wear head gear.

yes they are important, they are usually the number 10 so they direct play and usually kick the goals.

  2. A playmaker is a player who dictates the terms of the match,

He calls the passages of play and directs the players to where he wants them to be. He is the ringmaster. It is not usually a specific position, however you find most playmakers wear either the 10 or 12 jersey ala Wilko for England or O'Driscoll for Ireland.

Oh and the headgear thing is a personal choice thing. If you like your head in one piece its good to wear one.

In reference to another answer, guys like Jason Robinson and Bryan Habanna are not playmakers. They are game breakers. Those with enough individual flair to make an impact on  the game on their own.

  3. A play maker isn't a player in a certain position, nor is he/she a player with a single set of skills.  A playmaker can be any position on the field, a play maker is generally the go to guy for producing some wonderful plays, for instance, from england, Jonny Wilkenson is considered a playmaker due to his kicking ability, his passing, and his tackling.  Jason Robinson is a playmaker because of his speed and ability to change direction at high speed, same goes for Bryan Habana, the player of the year for 2007.  basically playmakers are people on the pitch which can change momentum, lift up spirits and make plays that make all of us at the pub scream in surprise and joy at them.
