What does a promise ring mean?

i know some few girls that have a ring that their boyfriend gave to them and they have told me that its a promise ring and idk what its for???

it's for abstinence. saying that they promise to save themselves and each other for marriage. sort of a pre-engagement ring.

A promise ring is supposed to symbolize "I promise one day I'll ask you to marry me."  I think they are the most pointless trends in the world.  I wouldn't want someone to promise that they'll ask to marry me.  I would rather they propose if they want to marry me, or not say a thing if they don't.

You will probably find that your girlfriends will tell you it is a promise ring, but if you actually asked they guy, they would probably just say 'it's just a ring', no 'promise' in the meaning in the traditional sense, that has been explained to you here today.

Meaning - It is all in the 'intent' of the giver, they may call it a 'promise' ring, but what it 'means' will be in the givers explanation to the receiver. Call it whatever you want. Meaning  will be different to different people, and only understood from the giver (eg; boy) to the receiver (girl).

a promise ring is a promise to god (or men or whoever really, their dad, bf, etc) that they will stay pure (not have s*x) until marriage. it just shows your commitment to wait until marriage, not just doing it randomly out of marriage or doing it with the "person you love" before marriage either. yup, thats all there is to it.
