What does a receiver do in football?

My boyfriend just told me that he became the receiver on his football team. I tried doing my research to see what a receiver does, but I didn't find anything...can someone tell me? I feel like an idiot asking, but..

The reciever lines up behind the line of scrimmage on either side of the field.  when the ball is hiked to the quarterback, and he then throws it to one of the receivers who try to avoid the defense and gain yards.  on a running play, the wide recievers try to block and clear a path for the running back.  i hope that helps you.
