What does a red band around a bird's foot indicate?

A white bird was outside my window and I noticed it had a red band tag around one of its legs, what could this mean?

Bands are put on birds legs by breeders to tell the males from the females. Depending on the color of the band. You might look to see if it has a date on it to tell when it was hatched.

It means that the bird is a pigeon, who belongs to someone.  Usually, the tag numbers can be used to find the owner.  Most tags have a number and a 2 or 3 letter code to indicate country or pigeon owners club.

White pigeons are released at weddings and such, as "doves".   Occasionally they are interupted during their journey home.

Unless the pigeon is injured, you can leave it be.  They usually just need a little rest before continuing home.

You could offer a little help.

You can give it water in a heavy mug, or other container that is at least 2" deep.  Splash clean fingers in it, so the bird knows that it's water.  

Pigeons eat grain.  Plain bagged unpopped (non-microwavable) popcorn, or green split peas from your grocery store work well.  Just put them in a shallow dish, or right on the ground.

If the bird cannot fly after resting, or has an obvious injury, you should attempt to gently catch it, read the band and find the owner.

It usually means its a female  but it can also be something the owner put on. Try and see if it has anything written on it. If not then it's probably a red band meaning a girl. good luck
