While swimming in the Gulf in Naples, FL I saw a dark blue/gray or black fin come out of the water. It was triangular. It swam along and I saw it come up again. I think it had a dorsal fin as well, but I'm unsure. could it have been a shark? what kind?

  2. If it was a shark, then you would have likely seen two fins, the second one being the high tail fin. But that depends how far below the surface that animal was.

How far out were you? Because sharks won't come in to water where they are likely to get stuck, and that level would be about to your neck.

  3. google it under images! good luck!

  4. As a rule, if the fin is more streamlined, and slightly pointing back, it is a porpoise.  Sharks fins are more triangular.

Also, porpoises kind of "hump"  with a rolling motion. and Sharks go straight or slightly side to side, sort of sliding up and gliding back down.

  5. If you saw a fin sticking out of the water then that was the dorsal fin.
