What does a sniper do?

What exactly does a sniper do on a mission? I heard they go to the restroom in paper bags, they lay in one spot for up to a month, etc...

Snipers are used more for intelligence than for taking out targets in todays military. In the RAF a lot of our snipers go up in helicopters and check out the area around an airfield, checking for enemy movement or activity.

However some snipers, mainly black market snipers or sometimes lone snipers, are used soley for taking out a VIP. It is very very rare for a sniper to have the one objective of killing somebody.

Most of the time these days you are out getting pattern of life intel on high value targets for spooks in an office in DC or elsewhere.

yeah they pretty much do that as well though... they are in a situation where they must limit movement. they are snipers! assassins! they kill a marked man. one shot one kill..

you get to experience what it looks like to be camoflauged to look identical to grass so have fun shooting people (is that supposed to be fun? depends on the cause and purpose..)

I can't speak for the Army, but in the Marines they are Scout Snipers.  Their main objective is to be able to infiltrate, collect intel, and "paint a picture" for the commander.

And they can shoot, but this is "icing on the cake".

The primary role of the Sniper is collecting intelligence behind enemy lines, and occasionally taking out key targets to assist a larger fighting force about to move in, or to cause panic and fear among the enemy troops with harassing precision fire. But the main role is to collect intelligence. Despite what the movies and games say.

I had a Sniper friend who has hilariously dangerous stories of his days as a Sniper, before he got shot in the back.  It is true you'd stay in one spot for days, weeks. Not sure about months.
