  1. Help people who can't help themselves or their children. Social workers get cases (families) where children are being abused, people have drug problems, put people on welfare, get them healthcare, and put kids in foster homes because the adults can't take care of the children properly. They're problem solvers using the city's resources and programs. People get in trouble, make bad choices and their families are the one who pay the price. Usually the kids. It's a messy thankless job and some social workers (in big cities) have so many cases they can't maintain them all, and kids fall through the cracks. If you choose this career, I applaud your courage.

If you’re looking for a career with meaning, action, diversity, satisfaction, and an abundance of options, consider social work.  Social workers are people who care about people, who want to make things better, who want to relieve suffering, who want their work to make a difference.

Social work is a profession devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment. This can mean providing direct services or therapy directly to people (called "clients"). It also can mean working for change to improve social conditions.
