What does a student teacher have to do?

and does he/she get help planning their lessons from a regular classroom teacher?

Generally speaking, student teaching is the final assessment of the undergraduate program for teaching.  It is usually taken in the final semester of college, after the praxis tests and gre's have been completed.  It must be taken even if the student has graduated with a bachelors degree in education, before the student can receive a teaching license.  

The college which you are attending will give you a list of school systems in your area to choose from.  It is a good idea to choose a school system which may have announced openings at this point, as to "get your foot in the door".  Once decided, the college will contact the school system, and basically just ask teachers in your licensed grade range if they would accept a student teacher.

Your first few days will be mostly observation, with some interaction.  Your teacher should slowly bring you into lessons, with some teaching time.  Eventually, the teacher should let you have total control of the classroom (this is contigent upon the age of the students).  Your college will be in contact with the teacher, and will be receiving reviews of your performance from the teacher.  

It is a good idea to remember that even if you don't agree with the teaching style of your teacher, it is best to follow the classroom rules that they have implemented.

The student teacher does get help from the other teachers.... but for about  weeks they teach the class all by themselves and the teacher just helps the students.

A student teacher assumes the responsibilities of the regular teacher.  The regular teacher assists him/her with planning.

get help planning from other teachers yes ... that way next time maybe you don't need any body's help you can do it on your own ... like other teachers do ... an dother teacher's at first asked for help too just like you did or gonna do from other teachers they did it too before they was teacher teachers they asked for help when they were student teachers .... so don't be scared to ask them for help they were just like you before ...
