  1. I work at UPS as a package handler for the twilight shift -- about 6pm - 11pm at my hub.

Personally, I think that shift would work better for you, or maybe even preload which is like 3am - 8am because you could go to school in the morning/afternoon and either work before or after.

Package handlers do not wear any uniforms.  Wear whatever you want, just make sure you have good work boots.  As far as the actual job, you will either unload or load trucks, and if you want to make an extra $1/hour, you can learn to sort by taking and passing a test and becoming certified.

I do have to let you know that I'm starting college in a few weeks and seriously reconsidering taking the package handler job.  It's a great job if you plan on staying with the company for a long time, but if you are looking for just a part-time job during school, you may look somewhere else.

  2. A package handler first identifies ways to destroy a package.  He may opt to use a sledgehammer.  Or, he may use the package as a jack stand while the tires are being rotated on the UPS truck.  If he is resourceful, he may employ fire and/or chemicals in the destruction of the package.  Package handlers are experts at spotting "FRAGILE" labels on packages.  Such packages are given special attention.  They are often dropped from great heights, or, if railroad tracks are nearby, the packages may be used as derailment testing obstacles for oncoming locomotives.  In one instance, a UPS sorting facility had been located near an Army artillery range.  Packages marked "FRAGILE" were thrown over the fence and allowed to sit in the "incoming" area for several days.  UPS has since gone away from locating their sorting hubs near car-crushing facilities and no longer sorts packages near steel mills or sawmills.

  3. I believe the package handlers load and unload trucks  and help sort the packages for shipment to another ups center or delivery.

Its worth trying , you can try sleeping a bit before work , see how it goes for a few weeks. Let the boss know you are a student .
