if you use bitpim it will help you out by trying to find a good type to convert the video to before transferring it to your phone. keep in mind that bitpim will also try to reduce video quality unless you force it not to (simply keep the bitrate the same).

Mobile phones can take a few formats, but mp4 should be ok for most.

Usually 3gp or not as often but mp4.

As the resolution varies it is easiest if you have the software from your phone manufacturer.  You don't get a CD of it very often nowadays so go to their web site and look for it there.
