What does a volleyball manager do?

I've been on the JV team last year as a junior. As a senior this year, I didn't make varsity because I didn't have enough time to learn the entire game (rotations, etc.). I do, however, know the correct footwork for spiking, serving, and the right body form for passing and setting. The JV coach knows that I have trouble knowing where to move on the court after a rotation, but he seemed very glad to have me as his manager. What do you think he'll make me do during games?

  1. u will shag balls get water clean up after games set up for games put up net take down clean after practice

  2. Our school is kind of advanced and the manager has this little pom pilot thing and she has to fill out the stats. so manager is a 100% neccesary important job. they also help with meetings n stuff.

  3. Well, during our practices our managers are people who tried out for the volleyball team but didn't make it, so they just help out the coach when needed, keep score, run errands and stuff like during our practices. When they're not needed they sit around at a table, or bump the volleyball to each other.

It may be different at your school, but since our school has like 5 managers because a lot of people wanted to be managers our managers don't have much work to do since there are so many. Occasionally though, if a coach is running late or they need help with that, they will toss the ball to us in drills.

At the games they just make sure everyone's doing okay and help out when necessary. They make point out some flaws in our playing to the coach in order to help us.

    Hope that helps.

  4. Ask your coach what he wants you to do.  When I coached HS volleyball, I usually had one manager per team per season.  This person had tried out for the team and was very enthusiastic and fun to have around, but just didn't have the skills to get any playing time.  But I could see a love of the game there, and would offer the manager spot to someone who I thought could help out.

Generally the manager helped me with practices by handing me balls or getting drills set up, especially drills that involved additional equipment like cones, tape, the BlockIt or our setting target.  She stepped in to a lot of the drills too.

During matches, she helped take stats, and would organize getting the water bottles moved from bench to bench.

Some managers had a lot of responsibility, and enjoyed it.  I've written college recommendations for every manager but one (that one quit mid-season and never asked me to write her a rec, which was a good thing because I would have said, "Um, you don't want me to write one for you").

So do it if you want to stay involved with the sport and be a positive influence on your team.  Ask the coach for specifics though before you commit.

  5. Ours don't really do anything.

All they do is HELP with stuff.

They help the team put up and take down equipment.

    Shag Balls.

    Get water.

    That kind of stuff.

They come to games and practices. They don't play, just watch though.

During games you sit on the sidelines and cheer.

  6. I had to call lines, do the scoreboard, and keep up with the book. Keep up with the water jugs and shag balls. Unlock doors and carry the 1st aid kit.

It helps to make hair ribbons and or some treats after the game.

    Cheer on your team!

    Luck :)
