There is a legend related to this name: A prince Acatl (ditch reed) fell in love with princess Quiahuitl (rain); but because their love was impossible the prince became so sad the he dissolved in tears and turned into a pond of mud where the ditch reeds began to grow, the princess became a cloud that recognizing her beloved, turn into a heavy rain,

that destroyed the reeds, and in that way died next to the prince.

  3. The name "Acapulco" comes from the Nahuatl language, and means "place of the big reeds".

The name the Chinese gave Acapulco was Ye Pa Ti, or the Place with Beautiful Waters.

The name Acapulco, although very elusive as to its origins in the native tongue of the Nahuas, can also be translated to "The place where the reeds were destroyed".

Acapulco takes its name from a Nahua myth of two young lovers: Acatl and Quiahuitl. When they were not allowed to marry, Quiahuil's tears melted his body and and reeds sprouted from the puddle that he formed. Quiahuitl became a cloud and floated until she found the reeds, which she watered generously, uniting herself with her lover forever.  The story goes on to say that she destroyed the reeds because of her jealousy. The younger reeds represented her unborn children that she would have had with Acatl.

So now you can understand the confusion translating the original meaning of the name Acapulco.
