Since you asked this question in the higher ed forum I'm assuming that you mean what is an adjunct professor.  If that is your question the answer is that it's a professor who is not a full time university employee, they're probably a full time practitioner in that particular field.  For example in law school you might have an adjunct professor in tax law. The professor would actually be a full time tax attorney who has a lot of experience in that filed.  You wouldn't not likely have an adjunct professor for a general course but usually only for upper level more practical courses (not for an intro to criminal investigations course but likely for a forensic science course).  Hope this helps!
