What does alpha and sigma mean??

well im sure you have heard of the alpha club or the sigma sorority....or somthing like that.

but what does all of those weird names mean?

or what do they stand for?

are they greek?

Alpha and Sigma, along with words such as Omega, Phi, Epsilon, and Rho, are names of letters in the Greek alphabet.  Fraternities and sororities in college typically use two or three Greek letters/symbols for their names, which is essentially a tradition dating back to old "societies" such as the Freemasons.  The actual meaning of such names?  I'm not too sure, but it appears to me to be nothing but a way to symbolize or identify such an organization.

    Also, note that the symbol used in a name most likely won't line up with the word itself.  For example, the symbol for Sigma looks like an uppercase E, even though Sigma starts with an S.  The sorority girls across the parking lot from me are all in the Delta Delta Delta sorority, and the symbol for Delta is a triangle.  They are often called Tri-delts or sorostitutes (sorry, I couldn't resist).  This is a because of the way the Greek is translated to English.
