What does amazon mean by 'unopened'?

Question

in order to return an item, amazon asks for the package to be unopened.

Does it mean that the cardboard box the stuff came in can't be opened or the stuff itself cant be opened/used?

they are referring to the goods inside the shipping container/box. no problem opening the shipping box but some items are not returnable if the original mfg's box the goods are in is open.
