  1. these ships have a docking bay in the stern here troops and supplies are loaded on landing craft or hover craft and sent ashore. then the wounded are sent back to the ship to be treated in the ships sick bay. These ships also have a helo deck to handle airlifted troops and supplies. these ships however usually don't carry there own helo this is done to keep space open for other  helos encase they need repair or refueling. this can be done in a small hangar on the flight deck so that operations on the flight deck are not affected. These ships carry between 1500- 3000 troops and there supplies for about two weeks of hard combat. I served on USS LaSalle(AGF-3) an APD that was converted to a flagship for amphibious forces known as an AGF.

  2. Anything it wants! If the docks are full, it rolls up the ramp to the parking lot.

But seriously...read up on the newly Christened USS New York. It has a landing ramp at the stern for troop and vehicle deployment and also carries a few aircraft...folding wing and fixed or folding rotor Choppers.
