  1. They basically help "the boss" in assisting with research, surgery, etc...just depends on the field that you're in.  It's like how a surgical technician is to a surgeon, or a dental assistant to a dentist.

  2. Go Heather, breaking out the McCurnin's!

It also depends on the practice: small, large, exotic, lab, zoo or wild animals.

For a small animal hospital the basics are: give vaccines, nail trims, anal gland expressions, clean ears, blood draws, urine collection, take x-rays, perform fecal analysis and other microscopical evaluations, perform ophthalmic diagnostics, perform dental cleanings, monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, apply bandages, and care for hospitalized patients.

Some of the more advanced things that depending on the state will require a license: anesthetize patients, place splints and casts, and extract teeth.

    Responsibilities of the Veterinary Technician

Veterinary technicians preform a myriad of animal care-related duties, but they may also be involved in non-clinical tasks, such as office management, client education and inventory control. Veterinary practices are organized into distinct working areas. A veterinary technician, depending on his or her job description and size of the practice, may work in all, a few, or only one of the areas discussed in the following sections.

    Reception Area

    Examination Rooms and Outpatients

    Laboratory and Pharmacy

    Radiology

    Treatment Room

    Operating Room

    Wards

    Hospital Management

There was too much to type for what Vet Techs do in each area (at least on Y!A ;-p). If you want I can email it to you.

Some things a vet tech may do:

Deal with patient records; obtain medical histories; weigh the patient; make sure the vet has the correct instruments, materials, and vaccines; lab tests; fill prescriptions; position or restrain the patient; filling out info on the patient's record; anesthetize and monitor the patient; gather blood, urine, and other samples; ...

Well I'm only studying to be a Vet Tech. McCurnin is the only info I have. ;-p
