What does an ant do if it's carried miles from it's home?

Today I drove to someone's house about 15 miles from where I live. When I arrived I noticed a black ant walking on the trunk of my car. My guess is that he was there when I left, and rode the whole way with me. I thought to myself "well buddy you're never gonna find your home again, unless you stay on my car a while."

Anyway so I'm wondering what it will do. Will it wander around aimlessly and eventually starve to death? Will it try to find its home? Or will it eat whatever it finds and live as long as it normally would have lived anyway?

  1. mix in with other ants or die

  2. Call Delta and buy an overpriced ticket home. You should pitch in!

  3. It will try to find food or some way to surive. Then after food it will find a new colony. well that is unless it gets squished.

  4. well usely they will wonder around and try to live off dead insects but since its a black one it means its a baby so i guess it will starve and die =(

  5. i think that it'll either die or find another... "pack".

  6. it will eventually die from not being in contact with other ants

I believe that most ants have to process their food first in order to eat it

and only special ants can process it

  7. It will most likely try to find an ant colony nearby. However, if it doesn't find a colony, it will die.

  8. Might join a new colony, or be a lone ant until someone steps on  him or falls prey to something else.

  9. Finds a new ant hill, and continues it's 3 day life. It's not like it will even notice anyways, every ant looks the same! Haha.

  10. No other colony will take it in, they will just kill it. It will surely die.

  11. itll be an ant

  12. lets hope for the best okay?

maybe the ant will pull a homeward bound moment

it will realize that the thing it wants most in the world is to return home to family and friends

the ant will travel across 15 miles of terrain, using its powerful senses of smell and direction, and eventually reach the pinnacl of its journey: a teary ant-eyed reunion

    or he'll be squished...sorry buddy =]

  13. Don't worry for the ant. Wherever it decides to go, it will have high hopes to succeed....and it will!

  14. die.

  15. if its sensors on its antennas cant recieve messages from its queen it will have no idea what to do and die

  16. It will try to survive but will be short lived.  Ants are like the borg, as in they function as a collective.

  17. poor little ant...it will prob get really homesick and wander around knocking on all the other ant's doors asking for help...then all the other ants will be really mean to it, then you will prob end up stepping on it

  18. It'l most likely try to find it's way back to it's nest. Probably never will, and will die in the process.

  19. It will probably join the nearest colony of ants.
