What does an em do on a ship

what does an em do on a ship when its out to see. ive heard all kinds of stuff does anyone really know? is this a good job in the navy

You really want to know what an EM does in the Navy? Same thing as all the other rates.... Clean all d**n day long. It's called HAPPY HOUR!!!

First it is sea, not see.  They stand engineering watches, they manage switch boards, and electrical safety programs, etc.

An Electrician's Mate operates the generators and switchboards that power most of the ship.  They repair most general electrical equipment like lighting and motors. They are included in the fire party for firefighting drills and in case of a real fire. They perform preventive maintenance on their own equipment. They stand various watches. They are in charge of hooking the ship up to shore power when tied to the pier and disconnecting from shore power before going to sea. If the ship loses power because of an emergency or a drill it is their job to start the emergency generator, which at that point is the only thing keeping the ship from remaining dead in the water. Believe me, the Captain does not like having to signal for a tow from another ship.

Living conditions, you eat what everyone else eats. Unless something electrical just HAPPENS to go out in the galley, then you can bargain for some goodies. You sleep in a berthing compartment with about 20 other guys. You play cards or watch movies or read in your spare time You get seasick (or not) just like everyone else when the ship takes 27 degree rolls because the Captain wants to maintain his course parallel to the shore during 35 foot seas. You keep your areas of the ship clean every day.

An EM Electrician's Mate does all the electrical work on board a ship at SEA, and in port.  He/She is like your local electrician...wiring, plugs, electrical equipment repair, etc.  You can get a real charge out of doing that job, but you might be shocked if you do a bad job of it.
