What does an "assistant" do in a ballet class?

I was offered a position as an assistant to a ballet teacher. I'm going to take it, but when it comes down to it, I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing! The actual teacher does most of the work.

  2. I've been an assistant for a ballet teacher for the past 2 years. What I was required to do was just be there to keep the children under control and make sure they're being orderly. I also demonstrated and led them in their exercises. The teacher tells them what to do and gives correction, but assistants will usually do the exercises with the kids so that they have someone to follow. Also, if you have performances/recitals, sometimes the assistants go out on stage and do the dances with the kids...but not always. It kind of depends on the learning ability and age group.

Hey and now that you're going to be an assistant, maybe you'll get to teach a class in a couple of years. That's what I'm doing this year. I've been assisting for 2 years and now I'm going to be assisting with one class and then teaching another!

Also..assistants are expected to be able to take over the class if the need arises. Sometimes the teacher gets tied up talking with a parent or they have some need they have to attend to and the assistant is expected to come up with exercises and such to keep the group busy. But that hasn't happened too much for me. : )

    Good luck!

  3. An assistant takes over if the actual teacher needs to step out of the room for any reason, and they help the teacher walk around and show the students how to perfect their move. A teacher at my studio had knee surgery, and the assistant also showed the class everything the teacher couldn't do

    Hope I helped :)

  4. You help out with the other kids/adults in the ballet class. Say if they teacher says she has to go get something and tells u to take over then u automatically teach the class until she is back. So, your basically just helping the class. Also, if someone can't do a step right then u help then with that because the ballet teacher has other things to do then just help one person she has to help the whole class. So, your there to help if she needs anything! Good luck!

  5. like you basically correct the kids if they are doing something wrong while the teacher is teaching. alsoo if the teacher were to step out and do something(like take a phone call etc) you would be the one to step up and continue the lesson.

  6. Hmmm... I'm not sure because at my dance school we only have our teacher. This may be because there are only about 15 people in my class, and also my dance school is in Australia, which may be different to other places. The littler kids classes have 2 assistant's though, which is mainly because the littler kids all need to go to the toilet during class. Which is pretty funny, really. I'm guessing an assistant might help the teacher by managing the music, correcting students if they're wrong (I mean like if the don't do an exercise correctly, if they're posture isn't quite right, etc...), taking over the class if the teacher needs to leave and the list goes on. Think of a ballet assistant as a teacher's aide here in Australia.

    Hope I helped!
