What does an umpire have to do to make you happy?

ok, some of you do know that I do umpire AFL (Juniors (field)/state league div 2 (boundary)) and with the season coming up soon, I wouldnt mind knowing what the viewing public expects the umpire to do on the field to be considered a 'good job'.

now before you answer, we cant make every decision correct!, we cant spot EVERY free kick (while we do spot most) and WE DONT FAVOR TEAMS (not even in the AFL!!!)!!!

so i wouldnt mind knowing from this forum what the public expects an AFL umpire and a local umpire to do on the field each and every match.

  1. Not yelling at their team members and learn some manners

  2. Ok, AFL ump. Don't take this personally but :

The week before last, my friend took his daughter to watch the crows play at aami.

One of the boundary umps didn't like what somebody in the crowd said, so he turned around and grabbed his crotch and stared at the person. This was in front of a lot of children.

Now I know it has nothing to do with you but things like this don't help!!

  3. Get a third Umpire,Just like Cricket!!!!

  4. Be able to accept criticisms from coaches and players in the press just like they accept the criticisms levelled at them.

  5. get extra eyeballs be consistent and make sure (no one knows where you live) lol

  6. I used to referee high school basketball here in Kansas. You just call what you see.

The fans always forget that the player CHOSE to break the rules, no matter if it is in the opening minute or the last five seconds of a close game.

The referee or umpire is doing their job to call a foul. Plus, a referee or umpire NEVER, yes NEVER decide a game. A player decided to foul. The referee or umpire just did their job by blowing the whistle.

Have a good year on the oval.

  7. only pay the ones you see

    don't second guess

  8. To always be consistent.

Umpires are a bit like police we love them when they are on our side and hate them when they aren't  but someone has to uphold the rules.

  9. The primary requirement from an umpire is consistency.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, this is a difficult area for many umpires in AFL.

Half the problem is the AFL s******g with the rules all the time!

  10. Make decisions on what you see do not let the crowd sway you.Make sure the punishment fits the crime don't over react to a bit of push and shove.

  11. umpire the rules both ways and not just for one team

  12. saw an umpire do the moonglide once and I was THOROUGHLY pleased.

  13. just dont favour any teams and u'll be alrite :)

  14. let play go on

  15. Sorry but umpires will never make me happy - its the nature of the sport !!

  16. be cosistent

  17. Ok ....

as you pointed out ... you're not able to make every decision perfectly ... so All I really ask of you is to do the BEST you can .... and If you DO happen to be aware of a mistake that you've made.. just acknowledge it and appologise ( YOU are human after all) ..

don't be too thin-skinned to allow the abuse to get to you YET at the same time Don't be TOO thick-skinned not to accept fair criticism.

  18. Start wearing their prescription glasses.

  19. watch the NAB final and see how good fair umpiring can be. That means don't favour the home team, or succumb to threats from the thug brigade.Either side of the fence.

There are some allegedly top level umpires who would do well to read this post, as they have forgotten that they're there to keep the air fair - and the ground as well - and want to turn into celebrities by being criticised by Jim Hird, giving 23 more free kicks to the West Coast at Subi, or being dropped cold  by the Burgoynes.

A shame that we are not allowed to publicise criticism of umpires: if the AFL variety had to face an assessment in the press every week, they'd stop the prima donna act and get on with their work.

As you appear to be doing, asking for feedback from the punters, good onya kid, keep going!

  20. Just don't favor any teams or players. And one thing that annoys me the most is inconsistency. If you pay something once and then in a similar example don't pay the free will p**s me off (:
