Basically on some select DVD's there is 2 copies of the film. The first one is your normal DVD. This can be played in any DVD player and computer. The second copy is the iTunes version. This is a version of the film that has been converted to work with your iPod/iPhone and when placed into your DVD drive on your mac or PC will be added to your library so you can play it wherever

Legally, you can't take a movie dvd and download it to your iPod.  It's copywrite protected.  They'll give you permission to download it to your iPod, free!
