  1. There are some benefits a HDMI switching or repeater receiver does ( not all HDMI receiver ) : - No matter What kind of video cable connected to receiver, you just need one HDMI output to TV. The second benefit is if you connect PS3 or Blu-ray player via HDMI to receiver, you get some new HD sound formats as DTS - HD Master or Dolby True HD from Blu-ray movies ( you don't need optical cable for sound ). Some advanced HDMI receiver also upscaling your DVD video to 1080p and more......

  2. The other responses are incorrect...

The RXV-363 does NOT do HD up-converting, but it will display its on-screen menus to the monitor output...Hooking the DVD directly to the video monitor is the purist's way to go, but you will not be able to see the receiver's menus...This is a small inconvenience...

    People do it both ways...

    Happy Listening...

  3. Well, higher end receivers will upscale any image to either 720P, 1080i, or even 1080P(if your tv supports it)

But seeing as how that Yamaha is a pretty low-end receiver, it most likely only supports HDMI pass thru which means that the signal remains untouched. I would plug everything into the receiver just because I like having only 1 cable running to the tv.

  4. Since HDMI is digital there should be absolutely no difference.
