You really have quite a general question here.  IP networking is what runs the internet, basically.  Every machine on the internet has an IP (internet protocol) address.  They range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 (with some exceptions).  Some of these addresses are public and some are private.  Some popular private networks are 10.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x.  Your machine is probably one of these.  

    When you type in www.yahoo.com your request for that sites name is converted into an IP address (by a DNS server).  Then your router (the overlord of IP networking) takes the IP address and asks other routers if they know where to find it.  Your request hops from router to router until it gets to yahoo.com's IP address at which point you get the information.
